I am a homeschool mom with six children.
Have you ever taught your children about the physical and spiritual aspects of planting seeds? Just as we can teach our children that by planting a carrot seed produces a carrot, we can teach them that planting seeds of thoughts in our head produces. Did you know that not all thoughts are our own?

We can't see what goes on in the spirit realm, but we can believe God's Word for what it says in Ephesians 6:12, "For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood, but against the powers and and the master spirits who are the world rulers of the present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly sphere".* So, we must teach our children that the devil wants to plant seeds in our heads? What kind of thoughts might a child meditate on? Perhaps, "You're stupid, Melissa doesn't like you, God doesn't love you", etc. I think it is interesting to ask them and find out what thoughts they hear.

How do thoughts affect our children's hearts? The Bible says in Matthew 6:21, "For where your treasure is, there your heart be also." In looking up the word treasure in the original language you find "thoughts" as the definition. So where your thoughts are there will be your heart. The heart follows where our focus of thoughts are, or the the heart reaps what thoughts are meditated on. If we change our thought pattern we change our heart. The heart is kind of the caboose and the thoughts are the engine that drives the heart. Thus, if we allow a seed of thought that is not godly to be planted in our mind (thinking on it or meditating on it) then we reap the fruit of that seed. That seed could take root and then come out of our mouth (that can be another study for another day-the sins of the mouth and what God says about the tongue). What we meditate or think on are the things we will speak. So, if we control our thoughts then we can better control our tongue. The Bible says to think on good things, whatever is holy and of honorable and pure...(Phillipians 4:8). Teaching your children that to think on good things means we plant good seeds in our hearts (and since the word of God is holy and pure, we should think on God's Word).

What should our children do with the unholy or evil thoughts? Teach your children to take these thoughts captive (2 Cor. 10:5). Teach them to resist the devil (James 4:7), to resist the thoughts. Teach them to sing out praises to God when they become aware of evil thoughts trying to be planted in their mind. Teach them to pray for anyone who is brought to their minds with negative thoughts. Pray aloud for that person. Remind them of the scripture that we are to bless our enemies. Play praise music aloud and sing God's praises when the temptation comes to think on ungodly thoughts. Whatever seeds we allow to be planted in our minds will affect our emotions and behavior (You can do another study on behavior being affected by our thoughts-Why did Jesus call the Pharisees white-washed tombs?).

In short, teach your children, while you plant your gardens in the Spring, that they need to guard their minds and hearts by making sure they don't allow the enemy to plant bad seeds in their minds. Talk to them about a seeds such as, "Mom isn't fair. She loves Johnny more than me" -- this is not a thought from God. Discuss with them how these thoughts affect our hearts and sprout if we entertain them. Discuss with them that these thoughts will also cause us to speak sinfully or behave sinfully (you can take this lesson and expand into how behavior is affected by our thoughts or words).

All in all let's teach our children the spiritual laws of sowing and reaping while we plant our new gardens. I think that it will be one that is better understood and remembered.

God bless you all!!
