Lee
Lee Ebler has been married nearly forty years and is mom to two delightful and interesting daughters. She has two, fun grandchildren. Lee enjoys reading, writing, baking and quilting...and sometimes gardening. She will probably never be caught up on her cleaning!
What do you do when you are nine, and the summer seems endless and
slow? And if you use the "B" word (bored), your parents will quickly
align you with a chore.
So, Eden decided the timing was right to "dig a hole to China." Not that you could really dig that far, we told her. It was only an expression.

Eden being Eden, parental negativism did not dampen her spirits. A Hole of significance would be a great achievement. Something different. No one we knew owned a Hole.
The Hole started in the garden behind the garage. This was where Dick
(not suspecting that the beginnings of The Hole lurked beneath his ladder)
did a slow motion fall to the ground. Fortunately, he was close to the
bottom when the ladder tipped into The Hole.

The Hole was ordered to be moved, and Eden next began excavating beneath the Chinese elm. This did not work well for mowing, and I had visions of lawsuits from NIPSCO workers and other uninformed visitors.

So, the Hole found its final resting place in the back of the garden by the fence, not far from the lilacs.

Then the fun began. It is probably somewhere written that "if you dig it, they will come." Eden's friend Crissie came almost daily. Eden sat on one side of the fence, Crissie on the other. They dug and talked, ate home-made popcycles, dreamed, and dug some more. By supper-time, they often looked like bedragged moles. I think once we actually did a hose-down in the back yard.

Somehow news spread through the neighborhood. (The kid-telegraph never fails!) Children we
barely knew dropped by. Some helped with the digging. Others, perhaps threatened by mothers
who had heard of The Hole's reputation for filth and not wanting to do more laundry, merely stood
by and watched. Or commented, like thoughtful engineers. The Hole was a child-magnet. And I
think perhaps it became an honor to have dug there.

It was sometime in August when Eden and Crissie managed to complete The Hole. It did not go
to China. It merely went under the fence. More tunnel than hole, really. But the girls probably
traveled a thousand miles in their imaginations while they dug.

I think somewhere there is a picture of them shaking hands through The Hole. And that was the finale!

Drawing from this, I suppose you could say that simple things can be the most rewarding. Dirt, shovels, summer days, and a good friend or two. Children can spin dreams of gold and beauty from dirt, from the ordinary.
And that was our summer of The Hole.
